• Bertrand Piccard’s Solar Impulse initiative selects one thousand efficient, clean and profitable solutions to environmental issues, presenting them to global decision makers.
• The MarinePaq passed the detailed assessment by a group of independent sector experts and has been labelled in May 2020.

Luxembourg clean-tech company APATEQ today announced having been awarded the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label for profitable environmental solutions. The labelling refers to APATEQ’s pioneering solution MarinePaq, treating wash water resulting from vessels exhaust gas cleaning.*

Following the success of the first solar flight around the world in 2016, Bertrand Piccard, member of the well-known explorer family, and the Solar Impulse Foundation have launched the second phase of their action: selecting one thousand solutions that can protect the environment in a profitable way. Target of the program is to demonstrate to decision makers the financial profitability of clean technologies and therefore, push governments to adopt more ambitious energy policies and environmental targets.

APATEQ applied for a membership in the Solar Impulse program, presenting its cutting-edge MarinePaq technology contributing to the reduction of vessels emissions. Shipping fleets running with heavy bunker oil produce emissions harming the fragile ecosystem of the sea and coastal areas of many regions worldwide. As international regulations have been issued to limit the emissions from vessels, the MarinePaq addresses both ecological and economical concerns. More than one hundred systems are operational on ships worldwide, among others the world’s largest container vessels.

The solution presented with the MarinePaq was assessed and formally validated by several independent experts based on five criteria: credibility of concept, scalability, environmental benefits, client’s economic incentive and seller’s profitability. The MarinePaq meets all requirements and was officially awarded the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label in May 2020. Being part of the program, APATEQ benefits from a vast network of innovators, industrial experts, decision makers and investors. All solutions that have been already selected and labelled to be included in the one thousand solutions portfolio, including the MarinePaq, can be found at www.solarimpulse.com/efficient-solutions.

APATEQ secures stable order intake despite the COVID-19 crisis

• Wastewater treatment company APATEQ received several new orders for its pioneering MarinePaq system, treating wash water resulting from vessels exhaust gas cleaning.
• To date, more than one hundred MarinePaq installations are operational on ships worldwide, such as the world’s largest container ships.
• The MarinePaq has become a market reference for scrub water treatment in the maritime industry.
APATEQ’s production has continued since the outbreak of COVID-19.

APATEQ, solution provider for the treatment of difficult wastewater, today announced an ongoing order intake for its systems. Despite the current COVID-19 crisis, affecting economies around the world, APATEQ is still continuously receiving new orders for its MarinePaq, treating wash water resulting from vessels exhaust gas cleaning by means of pioneering process technology. As of end of Q1, the orders are in the double-digit figures.

The on-board version of APATEQ's MarinePaq, launched in 2017, has so far been put into operation on more than one hundred ships worldwide, among others on the world’s largest container ships. The IMO (International Maritime Organization) sulphur cap, limiting the sulphur emissions from vessels to 0.5% worldwide and in defined regions (Emission Control Areas) to 0.1%, triggers a continuing demand for equipping existing and newly built ships with scrubber systems that reduce sulphur emissions to the required level. APATEQ’s MarinePaq for treatment of wash water from the scrubbing process is considered as a market reference in the maritime industry. The system excels by simple handling and long intervals between its maintenance procedures, allowing the MarinePaq to operate for a long period of time without interruptions. Surplus oil can easily be extracted from the scrub water, a feature that is unique on the market. The modular design of the MarinePaq allows an easy placement of the system in confined spaces on board as the modules can be set up in different areas of the room and connected by piping to form a unit, a characteristic much appreciated by shipowners and shipyards alike when it comes to retrofitting the system in existing vessels.

APATEQ’s production activities in Luxembourg have not stopped since the outbreak of COVID-19, respecting and enforcing the strictest precautionary and hygienic measures. The delivery of the latest ordered systems is scheduled for the second half of 2020.

APATEQ wins FEDIL Environmental Award for direct reuse system of potable water

• Business Federation Luxembourg FEDIL announced the winners of the 2019 Environmental Award with APATEQ being awarded in the category “processes – green technologies”.
APATEQ was honoured for its multifunctional system for direct reuse of potable water on the island Öland, strongly reducing the water scarcity of its local municipality Mörbylånga.
• A video about APATEQ and its award winning water reuse technology can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/QZV4Uvmp5gc.

Clean-tech company APATEQ received the 2019 Environmental Award in the category “processes – green technologies” from the Business Federation Luxembourg FEDIL. In its 16th edition, the biennial event took place at the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce on 26 November with Carole Dieschbourg, Luxembourg Minister for Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development, and FEDIL President Michèle Detaille, presenting the awards to the winners.

APATEQ engineers and manufactures high-efficiency water and wastewater treatment systems based on unique and innovative process technologies. The company won the Environmental Award for its green and resource-efficient system for direct reuse of potable water, which treats brackish well water and pre-treated industrial wastewater up to drinking water quality, supplementing the local supply of drinking water on the Swedish island Öland. Facing an extensive and steadily increasing lack of drinking water, especially during the summer holidays, the local municipality Mörbylånga was looking for a solution to ensure a constant fresh water supply tackling seasonal tourist-induced peaks and high water volumes required by the local industry. Previously, water has been transported from the continent to the island, which, besides creating a dependency on external supply and bearing risks of water shortages, was source of environmental pollution and disturbances caused from water transporting truck traffic. APATEQ’s system treats the different kinds of water within one single installation. This multi-functionality is possible due to a combination of APATEQ technologies, including dedicated software, which enables the plant to self-adapt to the different water qualities. The newly developed system is a European First. So far, direct water reuse systems have been only installed in Namibia and the USA.

“APATEQ is committed to environmental protection and the sustainable use of water as a natural resource”, said APATEQ CTO and co-founder Ulrich Bäuerle. “Considering the increasing demand for freshwater resources worldwide, smart water reuse systems will inevitably play a major role in the global future, tackling the challenges of population growth and climate change. We are pleased that FEDIL agrees on the importance of this task and selected us for being among this year winners of this prestigious award.”

“More than ever, environmental protection has to be the pillar and starting point for new industrial developments”, stated FEDIL President Michèle Detaille. “Seeing so many green innovations coming from Luxembourg is a strong indicator for our country moving into the right direction for a sustainable future with a circular economy.”

Besides APATEQ, winners of the 2019 FEDIL Environmental Award are Tarkett, Hydro Aluminium and ArcelorMittal.

Inauguration of pioneering water treatment plant including Luxembourg technology in Sweden

The municipality of Mörbylånga, located on Sweden’s second largest island Öland, inaugurated a pioneering water treatment plant to supplement the local needs of drinking water. Treating different streams of water including pre-treated industrial process water, the installation, that includes Luxembourg technology from clean-tech innovator APATEQ, represents the first of its kind in Europe. The festive event took place in attendance of Their Royal Highnesses Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, and Prince Félix of Luxembourg.

Facing an extensive and steadily increasing lack of drinking water, especially during the summer holidays, a local municipality of Sweden’s second largest island Öland was looking for a solution to ensure a constant fresh water supply tackling seasonal tourist-induced peaks and high water volumes required by the local industry. Previously, water has been transported from the continent to the island, which, besides creating a dependency on external supply and bearing risks of water shortages, was source of environmental pollution and disturbances caused from water transporting truck traffic.

Luxembourg clean-tech innovator APATEQ excelled above all competitors in the tender process conducted by the municipality of Mörbylånga, including established world market leaders in the sector. The stationary plant treats brackish well water as well as pre-treated industrial process water within one single installation. This multi-functionality is possible due to a combination of technologies that APATEQ developed over the years, including dedicated software, which enables the plant to self-adapt to the different water qualities. The system is designed to handle a flow capacity from 500 to 4,000 cubic meters per day, depending on the seasonal demand. In an additional step, designed and operated by Swedish water-specialising companies, its effluent will be disinfected and re-mineralised up to drinking water levels, according to the Swedish and international regulations.

“Geographically located on an island, our municipality is facing a limited availability of fresh ground water. With the prevailing conditions, population growth or any extension of water consuming industry represents a challenge in terms of water supply”, said Peter Asteberg, Project Manager for the municipality of Mörbylånga. “We are convinced that the new plant, including APATEQ’s technology, is the right choice to pursue our future urban development.”

“Our installation in Mörbylånga is the first of its kind in Europe”, said APATEQ CTO Ulrich Bäuerle. “So far, direct water re-use systems have been only installed in Namibia and the US to our knowledge. Considering the increasing demand of fresh water resources worldwide, smart water re-use systems will inevitably play a major role in the global future tackling the challenges of population growth and climate change.”

The festive inauguration of the plant, which is a result of a cooperation between Swedish and Luxembourgish companies, took place on 12 July 2019 in attendance of Their Royal Highnesses Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, and Prince Félix of Luxembourg.

APATEQ to supply one-stop solution for providing drinking water on Swedish island

• Clean-tech innovator APATEQ has been assigned with a multi-million Euro contract for the construction of an industrial size plant for brackish water, well water and treated wastewater by a local municipality on the second largest island in Sweden, prevailing against established global market leaders.
• The produced effluent meets drinking water levels according to the most stringent Swedish and international norms as it is intended to supplement the local needs of drinking water.
APATEQ’s stationary plant uses innovative technologies that enable to treat different streams of water with one single installation.
• The plant will be delivered by the end of 2018.

APATEQ, with headquarters in Luxembourg, engineers and manufactures high-efficiency water and wastewater treatment systems based on unique and innovative process technologies. The company received a multi-million Euro order for an industrial size plant from Mörbylånga kommun, one of the two local municipalities on Sweden’s second largest island Öland, to treat brackish water, well water and treated wastewater up to a quality that meets drinking water levels. Thus, APATEQ excelled above all competitors in the tender process, including established world market leaders in the sector.

The stationary plant treats the different water flows within one single installation. This multi-functionality is possible due to a combination of technologies that APATEQ developed over the years, including a dedicated software which enables the plant to self-adapt to the different water qualities. The installation, for which a purpose made building will be constructed, consists of a primary treatment followed by an ultrafiltration and a reverse osmosis. The system is designed to handle a flow-through capacity from 600 to 4,000 cubic meters per day, depending on the seasonal demand. In an additional step, its effluent will be disinfected and re-mineralised up to drinking water levels, according to the Swedish and international regulations.

To improve on the actual conditions where water has been trucked from the continent to the island, the implementation of APATEQ’s plant represents a break-through into the municipality’s future supply of drinking water. Mörbylånga will become independent in terms of water supply and avoid any risks of water shortages. Besides, environmental pollution and disturbances caused from water transporting truck traffic will be eliminated.

“Geographically located on an island, our municipality is facing a limited availability of fresh ground water. With the prevailing conditions, population growth or any extension of water consuming industry represents a challenge in terms of water supply”, said Peter Asteberg, Project Manager for the municipality of Mörbylånga. “We are convinced that APATEQ’s system is the right choice to pursue our future urban development.”

“Our installation is perfectly suited for the present conditions on-site. We offer compact, complete solutions for wastewater treatment and drinking water production that can be quickly commissioned at remote locations and easily operated and monitored by touch panel and remote control”, said APATEQ Chief Technology Officer Ulrich Bäuerle. “By means of our proprietary process technology for membrane filtration, preventing fast clogging and fouling, long intervals in between the effortless cleaning processes are possible.”

The plant for the community of Mörbylånga is scheduled to be delivered in November 2018.

APATEQ wins Green Technology Award for multi-purpose water treatment system “WaterPaq”

• Clean-tech innovator APATEQ has been awarded with the Green Technology Award at the Luxembourg Green Innovation Summit 2017.
APATEQ was honoured for its containerized water treatment system “WaterPaq”, using innovative technologies that enable to treat different streams of water with one single installation to an effluent of fresh (drinking) water quality.

APATEQ engineers and manufactures high-efficiency water and wastewater treatment systems based on unique and innovative process technologies. The company is winner of this year’s Green Technology Award, honoured by Farvest at the Green Innovation Summit. The clean-tech company has been awarded for its second generation of WaterPaq, a compact multi-purpose water treatment system that treats water and wastewater from different origins with one single installation, producing an effluent of fresh (drinking) water quality. This multi-functionality is possible due to dedicated software developed in house and a mix of different technologies that APATEQ master.

“Our engineers managed to combine very efficiently the process installation with sophisticated software so that the plant is self-adjusting its operation parameters according to the inlet water”, states APATEQ CAO Mireille Wellenreiter, who received the award during the festive ceremony of the Green Innovation Summit. “Being honoured by the national conference for clean technology for the third time in a row makes us particularly proud. Thus, APATEQ builds a solid rock of the Luxembourg clean-tech community.”

The new generation of WaterPaq is perfectly suited for an operation at any places where water is scarce, including remote locations such as islands, villages or resorts. It can support these communities to become independent in terms of water supply and to avoid any risks of water shortages. As the WaterPaq presents a unique solution to treat water of different origins to an individually required effluent quality, only a limited investment for the community is required. Besides, environmental pollution and disturbances caused from (fresh and waste-) water transporting are avoided. The fully automated WaterPaq can be quickly commissioned and operated remotely. The system is easy to handle for communal employees who do not necessarily have extensive experience and training in the field of water treatment.

The Green Innovation Summit identifies and honours leading developments in the clean-tech sector and brings together the domestic clean-tech community. This year’s event took place at the artisan confectionery Namur in Luxembourg on 19 October 2017.

Luxembourg waste management regional authority SIGRE inaugurates its extended and modernized system for leachate treatment at a festive event, taking place on 30 June 2017 starting with 3 pm at the premises of the central landfill in Buchholz-Muertendall. The landfill’s leachate treatment plant has been initially commissioned in 2005. Due to increasing through-flow capacities and rising environmental regulations concerning the treatment of leachate for direct discharge, SIGRE decided to extend and modernize the existing facility. The contract has been awarded to clean-tech company APATEQ in partnership with Chaux de Contern. The existing ultrafiltration unit has been renewed and enlarged and the entire plant has been extended by an activated carbon adsorption. Besides, necessary conservation and maintenance works have been conduced by APATEQ. The effluent from this leachate treatment plant will be discharged to the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Grevenmacher, being currently built.

“Waste management implies a large environmental responsibility that we take very seriously. With a 24/7 operation, we depend on reliable systems at the highest level of quality and performance”, said SIGRE Director Steff Schaeler. “With APATEQ and Chaux de Contern, our syndicate found strong, local partners that helped us to keep this high level when extending and modernizing our leachate treatment plant.”

The landfill Buchholz-Muertendall is Luxembourg’s only remaining outdoor landfill and one of the very few in Europe that have been completely relocated. The relocation took place starting with 1995 by sealing and securing the landfill in order to protect surrounding soil, ground and surface water according to latest environmental standard the at that time. SIGRE is one of three waste management syndicates in Luxembourg with more than 67000 inhabitants from 23 communities connected.

For the inauguration of the extension of the leachate treatment plant, Luxembourg Minister of Environment Mrs. Carole Dieschbourg, and SIGRE President Mr. Jos Johanns will deliver speeches. Afterwards, the installation will be visited and press questions will be answered.

Scandlines applies APATEQ’s innovative scrub water treatment system in Gedser, Denmark

Scandlines uses a brand new scrub water treatment system, produced by the Luxembourgish clean-tech company APATEQ. The treatment system MarinePaq cleans scrub water from the ferry’s closed-loop exhaust gas cleaner (scrubber). It produces an effluent according to the most stringent environmental legislation and achieves substantial savings on operation costs and flexibility gains for the fleet.

Scandlines’ two recently launched ferries for the Rostock-Gedser route are driven by Scandlines’ hybrid propulsion system which combines traditional fuel with electric battery power. The hybrid propulsion system optimises consumption by adjusting the engine output. Together with other optimisation initiatives, the fuel consumption has been reduced to almost one-third per crossing per car compared to the former ferries operating the route.

The two new ferries have also both been fitted with an exhaust gas cleaner, a so-called closed-loop scrubber. In short, a mixture of water and sodium carbonate in powder form, which is pumped aboard the ferries, scrubs the exhaust gas. Contaminated water from the scrubber is channelled to an on board separator for purification. When the solution cannot absorb more waste products, the scrub water is pumped into the shore based scrub water treatment system MarinePaq from the Luxembourgish clean-tech company APATEQ.

The system has been installed in two containers stacked one on top of the other at the harbour in Gedser. In a five-step process, the scrub water treatment system cleans the scrub water so effectively, that the cleaned water can be discharged into the harbour according to the most stringent environmental legislation, being substantially beneficial for the environment.

By operating the MarinePaq on shore, Scandlines may save expensive water disposal costs for hauling the scrub water to the nearest industrial wastewater treatment facility. The shipping company is also not dependent on the availability of external water disposal providers, thereby saving time and gaining flexibility. As the scrub water does not need to be treated at centralised wastewater treatment plants anymore, the MarinePaq contributes to a relief of these often overloaded facilities.

The onshore treatment of the MarinePaq also achieves a much higher quality of purification than any other existing scrub water treatment system, such as the ones offered for on board applications. Heavy metals, COD, nitrite, sulphites and nitrates are being reduced to much lower levels than any other solution currently implemented. As a result, Scandlines may count on an infrastructure that is capable of facing toughening and constantly evolving regulations.

APATEQ enters Luxembourg wastewater treatment market

In partnership with Chaux de Contern, clean-tech innovator APATEQ has been awarded a first contract in Luxembourg by waste management regional authority SIGRE to extend and modernize the existing plant for the treatment of leachate arising from the central landfill in Buchholz-Muertendall (L). The resulting water will be discharged to the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Grevenmacher (L).

APATEQ announced today the receipt of a first order from its domestic market Luxembourg. The clean-tech company has been founded in 2013 in Luxembourg and since then successfully engineers, manufactures and delivers innovative and cost-efficient, membrane-based solutions for the treatment of water and wastewater to customers around the world, such as in the USA, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Italy and France. APATEQ received this new order in partnership with Chaux de Contern, market-leading producer, importer and distributor of building materials in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, who was involved in the building of more than 70 wastewater treatment plants within the last 40 years. Customer of the new contract is the Luxembourg waste management regional authority SIGRE. The order refers to APATEQ’s unique leachate treatment system, combining proprietary process technologies with high efficiency ultrafiltration and activated carbon filtration. APATEQ’s system will extend and modernize the existing plant for leachate treatment. The effluent is planned to be discharged to the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Grevenmacher, being currently built.

“Landfill leachate consists of liquids created by organic and inorganic waste decomposition and rainwater seeping into the landfill. Typically, leachate is loaded for example with organic matter (COD, BOD) or ammonium. To protect surrounding soil, ground water and surface water, safe disposal of the leachate is undeniably an environmental challenge”, states APATEQ Chief Technology Officer Ulrich Bäuerle. “By means of our membrane-based technology, the contaminants can be reliably removed at low operational costs.”

“We are delighted that APATEQ now finally enters the domestic Luxembourg market after successfully positioning and marketing its unique water and wastewater treatment solutions internationally”, says Chaux de Contern CEO Eric Klückers. “The cooperation between our companies is characterized by the strong synergies of an established market leader and an emerging clean-tech innovator, a combination which is very inspiring and fruitful for both of us.”

Steff Schaeler, Managing Director of SIGRE says: “To ensure a proper, failure-free functioning of our modern waste management system, SIGRE depends on reliable partners with sustainable solutions, of course at competitive costs. MCW Energy Group and APATEQ commence discussions to combine expertise for the development of environmentally friendly remediation technologies portfolio

Joint press release issued by MCW Energy Group Limited & APATEQ

Toronto, Ontario, Canada / Luxembourg: April 25th, 2016: MCW Energy Group Limited, (“MCW”), (TSX-Venture: MCW, OTCQX: MCWEF), a Canadian holding company involved in the development and implementation of oil sands technologies, through MCW Oil Sands Recovery, LLC, (“MCW Oil Sands”) today announced that current discussions are being held to explore the possibilities of an association with APATEQ and its North American-based subsidiary, APATEQ, Inc. (“APATEQ”), an industry leader in wastewater remediation technologies.

The focus of this potential cooperation between the two companies would be to combine MCW’s proven oil sands extraction technology with APATEQ’s membrane-based solutions for the treatment of process water and industrial wastewaters. The target would be to develop a portfolio of technologies to serve the oil and gas industry as well as heavy industry applications in wastewater extraction / treatment.

MCW has spent six years developing an environmentally friendly extraction technology, which is now into successful production in Utah. This technology can also be applied to oil sands deposits and remedial applications for the massive tailings ponds in Alberta, Canada on a cost-efficient basis. MCW’s unique closed-loop technology requires no water, produces no greenhouse gases or high temperatures or pressures. APATEQ’s full-solution systems feature portable, compact designs resulting from the company’s extensive knowledge of packaged, containerized modules. MCW and APATEQ are considering the co-development of versatile, mobile units using environmentally friendly technologies for the remediation of contaminated soil and water. Both companies recognize the global potential of contamination remediation, not only in the oil and gas industry but in heavy industry as well.

“The synergy of both companies’ technologies is impressive. They both improve the environment with the separation of hydrocarbons and other hazardous materials from water, sand and soil. MCW’s extraction technology was originally developed as a remediation technology, therefore a potential to work alongside APATEQ means that MCW is gradually creating a portfolio of extraction technologies which are all environmentally friendly. It’s a logical next step for our company”, stated MCW’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Vladimir Podlipskiy.

“With this proposed joint venture approach, our two companies are further strengthening our respective RDI efforts, and we will have the ability to develop new markets and revenue streams with an expanding portfolio of extraction and filtration technologies”, stated APATEQ CEO, Bogdan Serban. “This proposed affiliation will enable MCW and APATEQ to exploit our many years of combined technological experience and market know-how. A successful alliance would produce a comprehensive portfolio of mobile soil / water remediation solutions.”

Discussions are continuing in order to establish a foundation for an association between the two companies. Further press releases will be jointly issued when a relationship structure has been formalized as well as a prioritized list of new product technologies. Both parties agree that their proposed association will potentially open the doors to significant, new revenue streams and will create a new benchmark for environmentally conscious clean-up standards.

APATEQ provides scrub water treatment technology for Scandlines ferries

Luxembourg clean-tech company APATEQ has been awarded a contract by shipping company Scandlines Danmark ApS (following: “Scandlines”) to develop, build and supply a harbour installation of its new one-stop solution for scrub water treatment: “MarinePaq”. The containerised plant will treat the wastewater produced during the exhaust gas cleaning process on Scandlines’ two new ferries connecting Rostock (D) and Gedser (DK); the resulting clean water will exceed current and future legislation.

APATEQ announced today the receipt of a major order from the Danish shipping company Scandlines. The order refers to APATEQ’s newly developed compact scrub water treatment system MarinePaq, using proprietary process technologies for high-efficiency primary treatment, followed by ultrafiltration and rounded up by heavy metal extraction processes. The MarinePaq will treat wastewater arising from closed-loop scrubbers that are installed on Scandlines’ ferries. The treatment will take place at a centralized facility at the harbour of Gedser (DK), producing an effluent with a quality compliant for direct discharge into the harbour basin.

Scrub wastewater is typically highly contaminated with heavy metals, hydrocarbons and soot arising from the heavy bunker oil used. Current treatment technologies available on the market such as hydro-cyclones and centrifuges are often overstrained with scrub water, especially in terms of eliminating the tiny lightweight soot particles that act as carriers for hydrocarbons. By means of APATEQ’s “MarinePaq” solution, even the smallest particles are reliably removed, providing an effluent that allows a direct discharge into open water. Sludge, arising from the treatment, is compacted by an integrated chamber filter press and safely disposed of in landfills.

“Scandlines as a shipping company has an environmental responsibility. We want to contribute to the preservation of the fragile marine ecosystem by cleaning our exhaust gases and by only discharging water of the highest quality back into the ocean”, states Fini Hansen, Scandlines Technical Superintendent. “APATEQ’s MarinePaq offers a unique solution to discharge the cleaned water even into the harbour basin.”

“We are grateful and proud of the trust Scandlines shows in our new technology and we look forward to the MarinePaq becoming state-of-the-art technology for scrub water treatment in the future”, says APATEQ Chief Sales Officer Dirk Martin. “Our MarinePaq is the perfect solution for treating scrub water either directly on-board, or as here, in a compact design at a centralized facility. We will build the MarinePaq for Scandlines in two 40’ containers stacked one on top of the other, ensuring a minimum footprint, an important factor for an installation at an existing harbor”.

“As APATEQ’s cooperation partner for Scandinavia, we are delighted to have facilitated this initial order”, said Björneman Water CEO Rolf Hollmén. “Our advisory team possesses decades of experience in the maritime sector and is strongly committed to reducing the negative impact of vessel emissions on our marine environment. To us, APATEQ’s MarinePaq significantly contributes to the realization of sustainable shipping in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea area.”

The plan is to deliver, to install and to commission the plant in Gedser (DK) in the spring of 2016.

New on-board scrub water treatment solves urgent problem

• The more common use of scrubber technologies on-board larger vessels opened a new problem, on how to dispose the highly toxic scrub water in a sustainable way
• A new on-board system to handle the hazardous waste is now introduced
• The Luxemburg clean-tech expert APATEQ complements its existing scrub water treatment system MarinePaq for use in ports with a very compact version for operation on board

Award winning clean-tech innovator APATEQ of Luxembourg is now introducing a new, very compact version of its scrub water treatment system for use on-board larger vessels. The effluent of excess water produced in a closed loop scrubber is treated in order to comply with IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations for direct discharge to the sea.

“The MarinePaq on-board system is developed on direct demand from ship owners in order to handle hazardous scrub wastewater,” said Rolf Hollmén, CEO of Björneman Water, the consultant bureau that handles implementation and sales of APATEQ systems in Northern Europe. “The most efficient solution for a ship owner sailing in SECA waters is a retrofit with a scrubber to continue the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) as alternative fuels are so far still on the margin. For a sustainable process, a scrub water treatment unit must be implemented to follow the scrubber. A year ago we introduced our larger systems for ports and now follows our ultra compact on board equipment. Scrub water is so hazardous, contaminated with heavy metals and highly corrosive so a very special process technique is needed.”

In full compliance with IMO regulations and better

Dirk Martin, Chief Sales Officer at APATEQ points out the advantage of APATEQ’s proprietary process technologies for high-efficiency primary treatment and ultrafiltration by using non-clogging membranes with a long lifetime. “Our well-proven equipment removes up to 99% of suspended solids and brings the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) below 40 parts per billion, thus exceeding strictest regulations for direct discharge into the sea, such as from the IMO,” he said. “Transportation of the wastewater to a harbor as well as on-shore disposal costs are avoided. My guess is also that with the tight schedules, many ships will not have enough of a turnaround time to empty the tanks at a disposal unit.”

Dirk Martin finally concludes the major features of the MarinePaq systems: “Regardless if the treatment unit is for on-board use or a larger plant in a port, they are constructed for a long life span and continuous operation by meeting the most stringent standards in a highly corrosive environment. To increase reliability, all vital functions can be built redundantly. As all of the APATEQ‘s water and wastewater treatment systems, MarinePaq is fully automated and can be monitored and controlled remotely, thus reducing the operational costs as no permanent supervision on-site is required.”

Private investors funded the hardware-based cleantech company APATEQ since inception in 2013. The company developed several solutions in the field of oil-water separation and water & wastewater treatment and it is predominantly focusing on oil & gas customers in North America and Europe. In order to pursue its business plan and further develop the oil-water separation segment, APATEQ embarked upon a financing initiative amongst institutional investors that culminated in the closing of a € 5.8 million funding round, led by Luxembourg-based Mosmart International. Mosmart International has developed proprietary and natural solutions that enable rapid and on-site treatment of wastewater and waste gases.

“We have been following APATEQ’s development right from the outset and truly believe in the company’s value proposition and its exceptional management team,” said Mosmart’s CEO Christoffel van Wyk. “We are excited about their prospects in oil-water separation, as well as the treatment of produced and frac water at conventional and unconventional oil & gas sites.”

APATEQ angel investor and majority shareholder of Eurobéton S.A., Robert Dennewald, comments: “We are delighted to welcome synergistic partner Mosmart International to the APATEQ shareholder circle. APATEQ’s management demonstrated exemplary entrepreneurial skills in the company’s start-up phase, evidenced by revenues within months of its creation, important international prizes and a rapidly expanding sales pipeline. The fact that APATEQ as a Luxembourg company was able to secure funding from an esteemed Luxembourg-based investor group makes us particularly proud and strengthens our success story ‘Made in Luxembourg’.”

“The funding enables us to accelerate the market penetration of our oil-water separation systems in North America,” states APATEQ CEO and co-founder Bogdan Serban. “Our compact, chemicals-free and cost-effective solutions address the most demanding market needs and the trials we have conducted in the US late in 2014 have strongly re-affirmed the competitiveness of our equipment even under the currently depressed and fluctuating oil price scenario.”

APATEQ plans to establish a subsidiary in North America around mid 2015 to directly market “OilPaq”, its containerised, on-site oil-water separation system. In addition to the current sales model, a lease/rent option is envisaged.

Frost & Sullivan awards APATEQ for its membrane technology

Luxembourg, October 31, 2014 – Based on its recent analyses of the advanced filtration technology market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes APATEQ with the 2014 European Technology Innovation Leadership Award for its pioneering integrated membrane system, which is, among others, applied for oil-water separation at oil and gas fields. The award ceremony took place in Monte Carlo on Thursday, October 30, 2014.

The wastewater treatment market is dominated by contaminant removal systems that are largely dependent on chemicals or enormous amounts of energy, or both. In the oil and gas industry for example, most of these systems do not use membranes but chemical additives for the separation process because oil often tends to cover and clog the membrane’s pores. APATEQ’s unique treatment systems with anti-clogging and anti-fouling properties prevent membrane clogging without using additional chemicals, achieving outstanding separation results at low operation costs.

“The effluent from APATEQ’s oil-water separation system ‘OilPaq’ can be used for re-injection into the borehole or the fracturing process. As it is not dependent on chemicals or enormous amounts of energy, APATEQ’s novel integrated membrane system breaks new ground in water filtration,” said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Lekshmy Ravi. “APATEQ aspires to be a comprehensive provider of water and wastewater treatment solutions and strives to provide maximum efficiency by offering simple treatment at low investments.”
“We are delighted about the positive recognition for our proprietary membrane technology by a prestigious organization and opinion leader for technical innovations in the industry as Frost & Sullivan,” said APATEQ CTO Ulrich Bäuerle. “Being honored with this award makes us particularly proud and it once more proves, along with continuously rising customer attention, that our efforts to develop high-performance water and wastewater treatment, especially oil-water separation systems at low operation costs, pay off.”

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has developed an innovative element in a product by leverage leading-edge technologies. The award recognizes the value added features and benefits of the product and the increased ROI it offers customers, which in turn increases customer acquisition and overall market penetration potential.

APATEQ starts produced water treatment in North America

Luxembourg, August 6, 2014 – Luxembourgish water and wastewater specialist APATEQ announces a six months lasting program of on-demand, on-site, produced water treatment with its oil-water separation system “OilPaq” in North America. The treatment activity will start at oil- and gas fields in Kansas and Texas in September and will end in Alberta in spring 2015. The target of this road show is to enter the North American market by proving the excellent long-term operation at very low operational costs of the system inheriting APATEQ’s proprietary membrane treatment technology.

APATEQ started its operation with the engineering and manufacturing of compact wastewater treatment plants and systems for the treatment of industrial wastewater. The company now extends its core business with oil-water separation systems to be operated at oil- and gas fields in North America. An initial containerized produced water treatment system has been shipped to a large European customer at the beginning of the year. An upgraded version that is capable to treat different types of produced water from different wells and that produces an effluent suitable for re-use, meaning re-injection of the water into the borehole or irrigation, is currently being assembled in Luxembourg and will be shipped to North America at the end of the month.

The pilot plant, which is built under ATEX specifications, will treat produced water directly on-site at the oil well. Thus expensive water transportation and storage costs fall away and the treated water can be recycled. This is an important factor, taking into consideration that huge amounts of fresh water are required for oil and gas extraction, especially from older wells that represent the great majority. APATEQ’s proprietary membrane technology excels over all other processes in the industry by providing a solution that separates even emulsified oil without the need of additional chemicals. The recovered oil can be entirely processed in refineries. Due to the proprietary process APATEQ implements, the utilized membranes last years before they need to be replaced. Together with very low specific energy consumption the operational costs of an APATEQ oil-water separation system end up at costs as low as $0.50 per barrel, which represents only a fraction of the treatment costs of conventional market solutions.

In addition to the already existing North American clientele, the APATEQ program is open to new participants by a simple no-engagement subscription. All interested parties may announce their participation by mail at producedwater@apateq.com or by phone at +352 20 211 680 70. APATEQ will come to your oil well and perform the treatment directly at your site

New water treatment technology for Italian fruit industry

Luxembourg, May 27, 2014 – APATEQ, Clean-tech venture from Luxembourg, announced today a major order from TEXEL, a leading agricultural cooperative in South Tyrol, Italy. The contract comprises a plant for the treatment of water that is required and produced in the washing, sorting and packing process of the fruits. To achieve purest clean water, APATEQ applies a technology that is new and disruptive for this industrial process. The plant will be delivered in October 2014.

Growing fruits requires large amounts of fresh water, which is used not only for irrigation but also for washing, sorting and packing. Of course this water must be very pure and cannot contain any impurities. It presents a major challenge for producers to meet this requirement and especially eliminate germs and plant protection consistently from the process water, which is typically re-used after a certain treatment. Common practice is using technologies such as activated carbon filters and gravel filters that however show weaknesses. They clog after a certain period of time.

TEXEL, one of the leading agricultural cooperatives in South Tyrol, Italy and pioneer for new technological standards, appointed the Luxembourgish clean-tech venture APATEQ to implement a new system for the treatment of their process water. Contrary to all other solutions available on the market, APATEQ uses membrane technology to consistently remove all germs and other contaminations from the water. By implementing the APATEQ system, TEXEL will reduce its fresh water consumption from currently 75m3/h to less than 20 m3/h.

“We developed a proprietary technology that allows us to use membranes to efficiently treat process water from fruit processing for re-use. Our membranes do not clog and allow long intervals in between their effortless cleaning procedures. The APATEQ solution is completely new for this market and will be first implemented at TEXEL“, said APATEQ Chief Technology Officer Ulrich Bäuerle. TEXEL Director Christoph Tappeiner states: “TEXEL stands for highest quality. We see ourselves as pioneers in setting new technical standards by applying the best technology available on the market and that is why we chose APATEQ for this major order.”

The plant will be manufactured in Luxembourg and delivered to Italy in October 2014.

APATEQ delivers first plant with its proprietary oil-water separation technology into an oil & gas field

Luxembourg, January 20, 2014 – Cleantech venture APATEQ announces its first oil-water separation product delivery for a large customer in Europe. The unit will treat produced water from oil production and hydraulic fracturing, requiring virtually no chemicals for operation using a proprietary technology. The Luxembourgish water and wastewater specialist expects extensive follow-up orders after successful field tests of the initial unit.

Less than half a year after starting operations, APATEQ received the first order for a pilot plant for oil-water separation from a large European customer. So far the Luxembourgish cleantech company developed, sold and shipped already several mobile units for compact wastewater treatment. The APATEQ team consists of water, wastewater and industry veterans, who developed and successfully marketed award-winning technologies in the past.

“We are thrilled about this contract as oil-water separation is planned to be the major growth segment of APTEQ in the future. We already filed two patents for our oil-water separation technology which is characterized by high separation efficiency, low energy consumption, compactness with virtually no chemical aids”, said CEO Bogdan Serban. “As a young Luxembourgish company, being chosen by European market leaders to treat very difficult deposit water makes us particularly proud.”

APATEQ Chief Technology Officer Ulrich Baeuerle explains: “Water that is obtained when extracting oil or gas, known as deposit water, is very difficult to treat as it contains various elements besides the dissolved hydrocarbons. Many companies have tried to treat this type of water, some unsuccessfully, others at some success but at high expenses and with considerable maintenance efforts. Our solution turned out to be the most efficient. The effluent from our systems is suitable for direct discharge, irrigation or re-use as process water.”

The pilot plant is mounted in a 40’ container for mobile use at different deposits and it will be delivered this week.
